]]>Introduction: In the fast-paced world of professional sports, effective communication can be the difference between victory and defeat. Recognizing this, Racing Radios, a leader in race team communication since 1979, is thrilled to introduce the Green-GO Intercom Systems. This innovative technology, combined with Racing Radios' expertise, is set to revolutionize communication strategies in motorsports and beyond.
The Green-GO Intercom System, a game-changer in sports communication technology, has made significant strides in environments where clear and instant communication is crucial. Originally used in large-scale concert and video production, the weatherized belt-packs of Green-GO have adapted seamlessly to the demanding conditions of professional sports, including the NFL and NASCAR.
Since 2017, the NFL has leveraged Green-GO systems to streamline its instant replay and injury review processes. This integration has significantly improved decision-making efficiency during critical game moments, ensuring that referees and technicians communicate quickly and clearly. The system's compatibility with both wired and wireless networks, and its ability to interface with existing radio systems, has been instrumental in enhancing on-field strategies.
In the world of Professional Racing, where every second is pivotal, leading teams have recently adopted Green-GO technology through a partnership with Racing Radios. The system's ability to link existing radios and enable direct communication among the crew has proven invaluable. It facilitates rapid, real-time strategy adjustments, providing NASCAR, IMSA, and IndyCar teams with a crucial competitive edge.
One of the key advantages of Green-GO is its flexibility. It can expand and integrate with existing communication networks without major overhauls. The direct communication feature is vital in dynamic sports settings, ensuring messages are relayed swiftly and clearly. The Green-GO systems, especially with the GGO-RDX-R interface, allow multiple users to key the same radio, enhancing collaboration among Pit Crew Members, Shop Technicians, and Paddock Staff.

A two-way radio is an electronic device, and water will destroy it faster than anything else. Always keep your radios away from water to reduce any chance of ruining them. The radio only has a certain level of water resistance, so it’s imperative you keep it stowed away in the event you may come in contact with water.
Batteries in radios heat up during extended use. As such, manufacturers build vents on the radio so the heat can escape. The ventilation of the heat prevents the radio from overheating and malfunctioning. Therefore, you need to keep the vents clear of debris so they can cool the radio.
Invest in a holster or a carrying case to hold your radio so you don’t drop and break it. When not in use, store them in a secure cabinet so you know where they are and can protect them from any unforeseeable accidents. Keep your system in a dry, padded location. Further, remove the battery if you are storing them in a hot area, and always remove the headset cables from the radio before storing.
This is worth mentioning only because people forget to do this until it’s too late. Check the batteries to make sure they are in good shape—leaky batteries could damage the radio. Set up a schedule for replacing the batteries so you can rest assured the radio won’t die during a race. Additionally, don’t store the radios if the batteries are dead. Store them fully charged or with some with charge, and don’t store your radios on the charger—no matter if you have the charger plugged in or not. It’s also important to note that the batteries need replacing every three to five years. A warning sign you need to change the battery is if it’s no longer holding a charge.
Anyone that has earbuds can tell you how fast they become dirty and gross. Racing earbuds are no different. The wax from the ear, dirt, and grime will start to accumulate on the earbuds over time. Clean them regularly so the wax and dirt don’t affect your ability to hear and the system’s overall performance. Consider storing them next to the radios when not in use.
]]>Racing is an analogy for life; the struggle, the work, the wins, and the losses. And like life, communication is key in racing. Information is power and the more information that a driver and race team have, the higher their chance of winning. The exchange of information and a good race car communication system are vital aspects of racing, yet they can easily go overlooked. The driver sits isolated in the car and only knows what is going immediately around them. It becomes important then that the driver and crew chief can communicate with each other for the exchange of information on track conditions, crashes, when to pit, etc.
In the heat of the race, a driver focuses solely on driving. It takes nerves of steel, instinct, and split-second decision making to compete as a professional driver. Drivers focus so much on what is going on right in front of them that they may not notice there was a ten-car crash in turn four. As such, the spotter and crew chief will tell the driver what to expect up ahead so they can avoid the pile and keep racing.
There is a lot of strategies involved with racing and knowing when to come in for a pit stop is high on the strategic list. It is up to the crew chief to decide when the car needs to come in. Then, they need to decide if the car will get two tires or a full set, how much fuel it needs, and if any emergency repairs are necessary. Communicating the need for a pit is important and can mean the difference between winning and losing a race. If the driver feels something is wrong with the car and wants to come in, he needs the ability to tell the chief what’s going on so the team can prepare and get the proper tools ready. This way, the stop is as short as possible.
Drivers usually have a rough idea of where they are in the pack. If they are leading the race, it’s easy to tell because they aren’t looking at another car’s rear end. However, knowing where they are in the race becomes a challenge when they are in the pack. Positions change often, as the race continues even when cars pit, get into crashes, and drop out. Knowing where they are toward the end of the race tells the driver if they need to be more aggressive and try to jump spots for the win.
It starts to become clear how poor communication affects a racecar driver when it’s the difference between winning and losing. The communications between driver and crew chief may not always be pleasant, but it is important and must be clear.
]]>The ability to communicate clearly and on-demand is one of the most important elements of racing. The driver needs to talk to the chief to get in race updates on the car, the position, and when to pit. The crew chief needs to talk to the pit crew to tell them what the car will need on the next stop, and when to expect it. Race communications can be the difference between winning and losing, so you want to make sure you’re working with the best tools available. The elements of a great racing communications system are all equally important to your success as a whole.
Over the years, racecar driver helmets have evolved into a marvel of technology and safety. They aren’t a leather half shell anymore. Inside a driver’s helmet, you will find a two-way noise-canceling microphone. Noise-canceling technology is important so the chief can hear the driver over the roar of the engine and surrounding cars. The driver will wear custom-molded earpieces, so they receive clear communications from the chief. External antennas are also available to increase the range. Plus, many manufacturers will add a push to talk button to the steering wheel, so the driver never has to take his hands off the wheel.
The radios that the crew chief and the pit crew wear are what everyone sees when they tune in to watch a race on TV. The chief is the only one that can talk to the driver and the crew. His radio has multiple channels so he can speak to them independently. They all wear racing headphones with the same noise-canceling two-way radio that is either digital or analog. For the crew members that must wear helmets, the fueler, and tire guys, there are communication systems inside their helmets similar to a driver’s kit as well.
The kit within the car is a series of wire harnesses, antennas, and boosters. The car is moving fast, and communications need to be clear so the driver can make quick decisions. Race teams will add antenna boosters so that there is never a chance the car will be out of range. Cars are set up, so the driver only has to slide in and hook into the comms system in the car and go. All necessary wires, boosters, and antennas come built-in to the car, so it’s ready to go.

]]>When a car races around a track at over 200 mph, problems come fast. At those high speeds, there’s no such thing as a small problem. During a race, the driver will report any issues with the car to the crew chief. The chief and driver will decide how urgent the problem is and if the driver should pit right away. Then, the crew chief will alert the pit crew, so they can prepare and get ready for the car.
The driver will also report on the car’s performance throughout the race. If he notices the car gets sluggish or the tires grab, he needs to report that to the crew chief. Relaying car performance issues will let the crew check past performance data against the current circumstances and adjust. Tweaks to the car will help it perform better and get around the track faster.
Inside every race car are gauges and warning lights that tell the driver they might need a pit stop. Drivers can unintentionally push their vehicles too far on occasion. When that happens, it’s up to the crew chief to let the driver know it’s time for a pit stop. Timing when to make a pit is an important strategy in racing, and it can make all the difference in a race.
The demands of competitive racing are stressful, and the stakes are incredibly high while behind the wheel of a race team’s finely tuned performance machine. With speeds over 200 mph and cars on every side, a driver experiences what some pros describe as a “pressure cooker like no other.” Drivers can get a little hot sometimes and need to hear a reassuring voice on the other end. An experienced crew chief will coach a driver through mentally and emotionally challenging moments so that a driver’s reactions stay in check and do not lead to an unnecessary collision.
In a sport where information, reaction, and timing is everything, clear radio communication gives your team a winning competitive edge.
